DIY tripod vs. Bautri: Why self-build in the DACH region becomes a risk – and a certified system is the better choice

DIY-Dreibein vs. Bautri: Warum Eigenbau im DACH-Raum zum Risiko wird – und ein zertifiziertes System die bessere Wahl ist

Anyone working in construction, trades, landscape gardening, industry, or with fire brigades and THW knows the situation:
You need a tripod to lift loads or have a safe anchor point in a rescue situation – and think to yourself:

"We could quickly weld together a tripod ourselves. We have steel, we have a welder."

Searching for "DIY tripod", "build your own tripod" or "rescue tripod self-build" does indeed turn up plenty of instructions online.
But: what at first glance looks like clever cost-cutting is in practice often a safety, liability and even legal risk – especially in the DACH region.

In this article we look at why a DIY tripod is problematic, what the Bautri System does differently – and why Bautri is not only technically but also legally a well-thought-out, protected approach.

1. Why Self-Building Looks So Tempting

The reasons are almost the same everywhere:

  • Cost: Finished systems look expensive at first glance.
  • In-house know-how: "We have a metalworking shop / workshop, we can manage."
  • Time pressure: You need a tripod "quickly" right now.
  • Underestimated complexity: Three legs, a plate on top – how hard can it be?

The problem: A tripod for load lifting or personal fall protection is not a campfire stand.
As soon as you are securing people or moving heavy loads over people's heads, you are in the domain of:

  • Standards and regulations
  • Trade association / accident insurance fund
  • Liability and potentially criminal law

And that is precisely where a "DIY tripod" is a very bad idea.

2. The Technical Risks of a DIY Tripod

No Verified Load Capacity

When self-building, the following are typically missing:

  • structural calculations,
  • defined safety factors,
  • independent load tests.

This leads to very uncomfortable questions:

  • "How much will it actually hold?"
  • "What happens under impact loading?"
  • "How does the material behave when corroded or aged?"

At best, nobody knows for sure. At worst, you find out when it fails under load.

Material and Workmanship "by Feel"

Typical weak points of a DIY tripod:

  • Unknown or unsuitable section and plate thicknesses
  • Welds without qualified procedures and tests
  • Missing or poor surface coating (corrosion)
  • No clear load rating, no nameplate, no inspection log

In short: it looks stable – but whether it is actually safe, nobody knows.

3. Standards, Liability & Insurance – the Invisible Side

As soon as you use a tripod professionally, the following apply depending on the application:

  • Requirements of the Machinery Directive (load lifting)
  • Standards and rules for PPE against falls (personal protection)
  • DGUV and trade association regulations in the DACH region

A DIY tripod virtually never meets these requirements:

  • no CE marking,
  • no approval as a PPE anchor point,
  • no recognised test reports.

If an accident occurs, the trade association, insurance company and possibly the public prosecutor ask very quickly:

  • "Why was no tested system used?"
  • "Were safe alternatives available on the market?"

The answer "We built it ourselves, it was cheaper" is then not a good defence.

4. And Then There Is the Issue of Intellectual Property …

A point that is often overlooked:
Professional systems like Bautri are not only technically sophisticated but also protected as a development.

That means:

  • Behind the system is a constructive idea that is legally protected.
  • Anyone trying to replicate the concept 1:1 is on thin ice – not only from a safety perspective but also legally.

You would not simply copy a protected machine design and use it under your own name – but that is exactly what happens quickly when someone wants to "quickly" build a Bautri-like tripod.

With an original system you are instead:

  • on the safe side technically
  • and at the same time respect the development effort and the legal framework.

5. What Makes Bautri Different from a DIY Tripod?

5.1 A Thought-Out, Certified System Rather Than a Makeshift Solution

The Bautri System is a certified adapter system that turns standardised construction props (e.g. EN 1065) into a high-load, stationary tripod.

  • Bautri Work – for stationary lifting and supporting of loads
  • Bautri Rescue – as a rescue tripod with PPE-approved anchor point

Both variants were specifically developed and tested for the requirements of SMEs, landscape gardeners, construction firms, industry and BOS (fire brigade, THW, rescue services) in the German-speaking region.

5.2 Standard Construction Props Rather Than "Random Tubes"

Bautri deliberately relies on:

  • globally available, standardised construction props,
  • with clearly defined load capacities,
  • manufactured by well-known formwork manufacturers.

This ensures:

  • predictable load capacities,
  • calculable behaviour,
  • easy procurement – also in the DACH region.

5.3 Verified Quality & Documentation

The Bautri System includes:

  • Testing by an independent testing service provider
  • Certificates and CE marking
  • Clear specifications for prop classes, assembly heights, application limits
  • Inspection log, nameplate, technical documentation

In short: you know what the system can and cannot do – and can prove it if necessary.

6. DIY Tripod vs. Bautri – Direct Comparison

Criterion DIY Tripod / Self-build Bautri System (Work / Rescue)
Load capacity Guesswork defined, tested, documented
Standards & regulations generally not met designed for relevant standards and regulations
Personal protection highly critical, hardly justifiable compliant and permitted with Bautri Rescue
Documentation & proof usually none Inspection log, nameplate, documents for trade association & risk assessment
Legal risk high (liability, insurance, criminal law) significantly reduced through tested, documented solution
Intellectual property often unknowingly infringing protected rights use of the original, protected development
Image with customer / authority "homemade" professional, recognisable system

7. Practice in the DACH Region: Two Typical Situations

Example 1: Landscape Gardening Company in Germany

A landscape gardening company regularly removes root stocks and repositions heavy boulders. An employee suggests "building a tripod ourselves".

Instead, the company decides on a Bautri Work:

  • The system fits in the van.
  • Roots and stones are lifted stationarily and under control.
  • In the quote to the customer, certified technology can be referenced.
  • With the trade association and insurance it is clearly documented what technology is being used.

Example 2: Volunteer Fire Brigade / THW in Austria or Switzerland

A unit is looking for a rescue tripod for shaft rescue and personal protection. A self-build would be cheaper – but:

  • Emergency personnel work at the limit of fall protection and rescue.
  • In an emergency, nobody wants to have to explain why a self-constructed solution failed.

With Bautri Rescue the unit can demonstrate:

  • Use of a tested, approved rescue tripod,
  • clear documentation for internal regulations and training,
  • legally sound basis in the event of an accident.

8. Conclusion: No "Do It Yourself" When Safety Is at Stake

DIY has its place – for the barbecue, the shelf, the campfire stand.
But:

As soon as you are lifting loads over people's heads or securing people, a DIY tripod is not a clever solution but an incalculable risk.

The Bautri System offers you:

  • a certified, stationary tripod,
  • based on standardised construction props,
  • with verified quality and clear documentation,
  • and as a well-thought-out, protected development.

Especially for companies and organisations in the DACH region, that is the difference between "it'll probably hold" and "we work with a professional, demonstrably safe solution".
